57 Anne Marie (n?e Robertson) Sampson
May 27, 1941 - November 30, 2025
Anne Marie Sampson (n?e Robertson), age 84, of St. Peters, passed away peacefully at home on November 30, 2025, surrounded by her family and loved ones. Born on May 27, 1941 in French Cove, Anne was the second of four children born to Charles and Alice Robertson. She is predeceased by both parents, youngest brother, Abraham ?, granddaughter Jillian Sampson ?, and great granddaughter Karsyn Varga ?. Anne is lovingly remembered by her husband of 64 years, Gus; their children Scott (Linda Varga) Sampson, Ken (Corinne) Sampson, and Rosalie (John Watt) Sampson. Anne and Gus were blessed with twelve grandchildren ? Nancy McGaw, James Varga, Erik Varga; Ryan Sampson, Aimee Sampson, Quinn (Trevor) Lightbown, Trevor (Hailey) Sampson, Kai (Ashley Stoperski) Sampson, and Liam (Naomie Groves) Sampson; Gareth Watt, Kynan (Sam) Watt; eight great-grandchildren ? Eamon and Rory Watt; Erika, Charlee, Easton, Colton and Dash Varga; Calvin and Riley Kostuk. Surviving siblings include Ralph (Marge) Robertson & Jean (Billy ?) MacDonald, along with a host of nieces and nephews. Before tying the knot, Anne worked as a waitress at the Cozy Corner and later at Kaplan's Department Store in St. Peters. She and Gus began their life together in a modest four-room home in Sampsonville. Twelve years later, they moved to a three-bedroom house overlooking the Bras d'Or Lake with a breathtaking and panoramic view, complete with a homemade slip for Gus's boat? where, according to family legend, every possible saltwater lake fish was caught and eaten. They lived there for 39 years before moving into town on Seabreeze Lane four years ago. Once their children were in junior high and high school, Anne spent several years working at the local Sears Catalogue office. Her truest vocation, though, was that of a homemaker. When she was not tending her garden, preparing meals, or baking something special, she could often be found knitting sweaters, socks, mittens, gloves, and afghans, or sewing clothing and quilts for others. Anne took great joy in these crafts, always accompanied by her warm smile and quiet strength. Summers were frequently spent camping with family and close friends. She and Gus had a special fondness for Whycocomagh Provincial Park, where days were filled with games, evenings with campfires, and trails with adventure. If marshmallows were on the menu, Anne insisted they were roasted to perfection? lightly toasted to a pure golden-brown, never overdone. There was never a shortage of card games at the Sampson household. Whether cribbage, scat, or auction, lively banter and friendly but fierce competition were guaranteed. The teapot seemed never to be empty, and Anne's fresh baking had a way of magically appearing on the kitchen table at just the right moment. For a number of years, four-wheelers became a beloved pastime. Anne and Gus often ventured onto the back trails with friends, pausing along the way to build a small fire and enjoy a snack and a cup of tea. Anne's life was defined by devotion to her family. She and Gus worked tirelessly to support their children in school activities, community events, and competitive sports. Few games or tournaments took place without them cheering proudly from the front row. She touched countless lives with her generous and kind-hearted contributions to the community. Over several years she participated enthusiastically in the Mad Hatters chapter of the Relay for Life out of Arichat. Anne was especially known as Mrs. Claus, often accompanying Gus as Santa for local events during the Christmas season. Their outfits were never store-bought? they were handmade by Anne, adding a personal and enchanting touch. We take comfort in knowing that Anne's legacy continues through her family and all who were blessed to have known her. Though her voice is now silent, her spirit and her love continue to resonate in all of us. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to our longtime family physician, Dr. Pluta. Thank you to the medical team at the Strait Richmond Hospital for their compassionate care and unwavering support during Anne's hospitalization? Drs. MacInnis, Hanspal, DeRoche and Gillis. Special thanks to RN Leslie LeRue, and Rehab Assistant, Jessica Macdougall. Thanks also go to the St. Peter's Volunteer Fire Department and the EHS ambulance drivers that safely transported Anne from home to The Strait Richmond and to St. Martha's Hospital in Antigonish. Our gratitude extends to Kathy, Megan and Hilary, the Continuing Care Nurses that so lovingly looked after Anne while she was at home. Also to the VON. While at home and in palliative care, Anne's daughter Rosalie, a registered nurse, provided devoted around-the-clock care for which the entire family is so grateful. Further support was provided by her sister Jean and daughter-in-law, Corinne. A special thank you is extended to Nelda Sampson, a very close friend of Anne, who was also with the family at the time of Anne's passing. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to Funeral Director Rachael Green and the staff at Green's Funeral Home in Port Hawkesbury for their thoughtful support, sensitivity, and professionalism throughout Anne's final arrangements. Their kindness brought comfort during a very difficult time. Thank you to Fr. Duaine Devereaux and the St. Peter's Church choir. The promise of the risen Christ gives us assurance and peace. You helped us celebrate Anne's life with confidence.

68 ary Frances McDonald Ecker, a well-known resident of Montauk who founded the hamlet's food pantry, worked as a teacher's aide, and led the Friends of Erin St. Patrick's Day parade in 2009 as its grand marshal, died on Sunday at East End Hospice's Kanas Center in Quiogue. She was 89 and had colon cancer.

Known to friends as Fran, Mrs. Ecker was born on Oct. 20, 1928, at home in Montauk's old fishing village, on what is now Navy Road, to Mary Jane Burke and Charles Leonard McDonald, who were originally from D'Escousse, Nova Scotia. After the family lost their house in the 1938 hurricane, they moved to a Carl Fisher cottage in the Shepherd's Neck neighborhood.

During her childhood and teenage years, the family's living room served as a Sunday School classroom, the basement as a roller-skating rink, the yard as a softball field, and the kitchen as both a late-night and early-morning breakfast spot for friends.

Mrs. Ecker attended the Montauk School and East Hampton High School, where she worked as a secretary after graduation. On April 18, 1953, she married Edward V. Ecker Sr., who would later become the East Hampton Town supervisor and a town councilman. Within a year of their marriage, the couple welcomed the first of their three children.

For the next 16 years, Mrs. Ecker was a stay-at-home mother. She read stories, hand-made clothes, became a Cub Scout den mother, and organized beach days in summer and ice-skating and sleigh-riding outings in winter. She set family suppertime at 6 p.m. sharp. Afterward, a kickball game with neighbors would often take place in the yard. She also welcomed her first cousin, a widow with three children, to share her home.

She became a teacher's aide at the Montauk School in 1970, where a number of the babies of new faculty members still have the Christmas stockings she knit for them over the years. She was at the school for 24 years, during which time she and Inez Fox, a colleague, agreed that some school families could use help in providing food for their children. The two co-founded the Montauk Food Pantry in 1984, and Mrs. Ecker served as its director until last year.

She was named the Montauk Chamber of Commerce's Woman of the Year in 2002, and received the same honor from the Montauk Village Association, the Kiwanis Club of East Hampton, and the Rotary Club of East Hampton in 2017.

She loved knitting, crocheting, and baking, and was a devoted congregant of St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church, where she was a member of the choir and the altar society, and served as a Eucharistic minister.

Her husband died before her. A son and two daughters, all of Montauk, survive. They are Edward V. Ecker Jr., Cheryl Ecker Bloecker, and Catherine Ecker Flanagan. Three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.

After the war he attended Fordham University in NY and received a BA in history. He watched Yogi Berra play baseball and Vince Lombardi play football while at Fordham, living in quonset huts near the athletic fields which housed the surge of young veterans returning from WWII.

He met Mary Elizabeth Washburn of Winchester on a blind date arranged by his cousin, and they married in 1958. They raised their two children, Brian and Maureen, in North Woburn, where they were quite active in St. Anthony's parish and shared many friendships there.

Bernie held a variety of jobs in his early career and settled into the work with the state Department of Youth Services as a Juvenile Parole Officer and later Case Manager. Bernie was the recipient of many awards throughout his career, and was very proud to be the recipient of a commendation by Governor Dukakis upon his retirement in the 1980s.

Bernie and Mary were longtime residents of New Horizons at Choate in Woburn, where they enjoyed many friends and activities.

89 Billy George Pullin, age 90, of Wharton, Texas (formerly of Runge, Texas) passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at the Sodalis Senior Living facility in Wharton.

He was born on May 11, 1934, in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania to George and Ann Bode.

Billy moved to Runge, Texas, where he was adopted by Carl and Lillie Pullin at an early age. He graduated from Runge High School, attended college in Kingsville and San Marcos, and eventually went into the U.S. Army.

He married the love of his life, Mary Esther, on August 28, 1956. He deeply loved his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and expressed those feelings often. He accepted Christ as his Savior and lived out his commitment in local church ministry. He taught Sunday School and led the music at First Baptist Church in Runge for over forty years, where he also was an active deacon. He was an emeritus deacon at First Baptist Church in Wharton in his later years, where he enjoyed faithful attendance to church and Sunday School. Aside from local church activities, he always encouraged his church to give and go on mission trips.

Billy and Mary Esther enjoyed traveling to over forty locations overseas, throughout the U.S., and in Texas, leading lay-led revivals. The joy of sharing Christ with others was a lifelong passion that led to his appointment as the Vice-President of Lay-Led Revivals in the state of Texas.

Besides the Lord, Billy's other passion was the meat business. He owned meat markets in Runge, Kenedy, and Victoria over the years. Even at the end of his life, he was still selling sausage in his mind.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Esther Pullin; sister and brother-in-law, Beth and Vince Faga.
