| 6 | In 1924, Luther was employed on a construction project in Houston, Texas. He fell from the roof of a building, but managed to grab something at the edge of the roof and hold on. He hung there by one hand for a considerable length of time before being rescued. Evidently, serious damage was done to the arm by which he hung there, and he was hospitalized. While still in the hospital, a blood clot formed in that arm that resulted in his untimely death. His body was transported toCorpus Christi for burial. http://www.texasearch.com/johnston/i0001001.htm#i1598b https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/20316601/luther-otto-johnston | Johnston, Luther Otto (I3598)

| 7 | 'Anica' as she was known to her family and many friends, was born in Omisalj, Otok Krk, Croatia, the oldest of four surviving children born to Dinka Sucic and Nikola Feretic. Despite growing up during World War II, Ann had very fond memories of being with her family, friends and neighbors, as well as her time at secondary school in Krk with the camaraderie of her friends. After her father passed away from mortal wounds sustained during the D-Day invasion in Normandy, the family set sail and immigrated to the United States, landing at Ellis Island, starting a new life in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. Ann and her family thrived in the close-knit Croatian community in Chelsea. She worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield, married her husband John in 1957 and together they raised their daughters in Astoria, then Bayside, New York. Ann also took great joy in her role as a cherished grandmother to Bobby and Michelle. Her greatest passion was gathering with her family to cook and share meals, creating lasting memories filled with love, laughter and family stories. After her husband passed away, Ann stayed active and connected with the community by visiting the local library, and by joining the craft club at St. Joshaphat's Roman Catholic Church in Bayside, where she found a strong sense of community and made many friends, ultimately introducing others to the club as well. For several years, they prayed, crafted and sold their creations together, went on many field trips, and truly enjoyed all the activities. A devoted Catholic, Ann will be remembered as always being strong, motivated, brave, curious, nurturing and selfless. Ann endured much difficulty walking due to a painful left hip. She was ahead of her time however, in the early 1980's, when she embraced a clean diet, which included vitamins and juicing, and to which she credited keeping her mobile and healthy. In November 2023, Ann made the brave decision to move to independent assisted living. In her 9 months living there, she regained her confidence walking the wide hallways - from the lobby where she spent many hours reading, doing word search puzzles, taking in the entertainment and activities, to the gym where she went daily, and theater for movies, talks and special events, and when the weather turned warmer, outdoors in the courtyard where she obtained an envious tan. Ann was preceded in death by her beloved husband John. She is survived by her daughters Miriam and Diane, her son-in-law Bob, her grandson Bobby and his wife Olivia, and her granddaughter Michelle, in addition to her siblings Lucy, Anthony and Stephen, as well as her nieces and nephews, and cousins. We will truly miss Ann 'Anica', who was a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She will forever be in our hearts. | Feretic, Anica (I28113)

| 11 | (Medical):Mildred Mayme McWilliams was born in Mason County near Pontotoc Texas on January 7th in 1921 to Robert A. and Stella Mae Jones Vest. She went to be with the Lord on January 9th, 2 days past her 93rd birthday. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Millard Clinton McWilliams, her son, Tommy Robert McWilliams, and her son-in-law, Eddie Rodgers. She is survived by her daughter, Stella McWilliams Hunt and husband Bill Hunt, Jr. of Denton, son, Douglas Clinton McWilliams and wife Karon McWilliams of Fredonia, daughter Patty McWilliams Rodgers of Florence, and one sister-in-law Martha Jane Sessom. Mildred is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 10 great-great Grandchildren, all who lovingly refer to her a Granny Mac. Mildred was the only surviving child born to Bob and Stella Vest. She was so small they laid her in a shoe box lined with hand picked cotton. They placed the box in an open drawer of the chest of drawers closest to the fireplace so they could regulate the heat. To the great sadness of the family, her mother, Stella Vest, died when Mildred was only nine months old. Bob Vest raised Mildred with the help of his two old-maid sisters, Lucy and Lucinda. Mildred was brought up in the log house on the Vest Homestead located near Slick Mountain. She graduated from Hutchinson High School in Pontotoc and married Millard, a Fredonia boy on June 20, 1939. They were married sixty-one years before Millard passed away. Working side-by-side, Mildred and Millard raised not only four children but also gardens large enough to feed a community of friends and families. No one ever left their home without a full stomach or a paper sack of venison or home grown vegetables. Mildred loved sewing, quilting, and growing flowers. One of her biggest joys was to gather bouquets of fragrant flowers from her own flower beds and decorate as many rooms as possible at the Llano Nursing homes. Without complaint, she spent long hours at the bedside of her son Tommy, and made several trips per week to visit the numerous elderly Vest family members in the nursing home. Her children considered it an honor to take care of her during her old age. Her daughter, Stella, says Mildred believed that everyone who walked on this earth was equal. Doug said it was easy to sum up his mother's life, "She simply was a very good woman." Patty said she will remember watching her mother reach out to grasp anyone within reach of her wheelchair, always telling them how much she loved them. She spent her entire life leading by example and telling others about Jesus. Mildred found great joy in attending many different churches in her life and in her later years, joined the Lawler Baptist Church in Florence, TX. Her children will miss her dearly, but, take great joy in knowing they will see her again | Vest, Mildred Mayme (I7761)

Stephen White of the Centre D'?tudes Acadiennes at the Universit? de Moncton, New Brunswick, suggests that she might be a member of the Hill family. That family traveled back and forth between Cape Breton and Cape Ray, Newfoundland. There was a Marie Hill who was born about 1727, daughter of Jean [John] and Marie (Carmel) Hill dit Montagne. No proof has yet been found that this Marie Hill was the wife of Thomas McDonald, but the probability exists. It is known that Thomas McDonald was in Newfoundland about 1747/8, as his son Edward was born there at that time. There is however no record of why or when Thomas McDonald came to Newfoundland. In his book The Irish in Newfoundland 1623 - 1800 (St. John's, 1982), Michael J. McCarthy states that during that period most Irish came to Newfoundland as "Irish Youngsters", meaning generally unmarried men who arrived as servants, usually for two summers and one winter. Irish also came as convicts and soldiers. By the mid-eighteenth century the Irish had strongholds on the Avalon Peninsula, Trinity, Bonavista and Fogo. Although the Irish outnumbered the English by fifty percent in the major Newfoundland communities, they were not in political control and suffered at the hands of the English. This is evident in a 1764 order by Governor Hugh Palliser designed to decrease the number of 'idle persons,' on the island, especially Irish Catholics. The orders read in part: ...That no Papist servants, man or woman shall remain at any place where they do not fish or serve during the summer preceeding. That not more than two Papist men shall dwell in one house during the winter except such as have a protestant master. That no Papist shall keep a public house or vend liquor by retail.... In his Uniacke's Sketches of Cape Breton (Halifax: 1958) C. Bruce Fergusson notes that in 1767 Governor Palliser ordered: To The Magistrates of St. John's: Whereas a great number of hutts are erected, possessed and inhabited by Irish Roman Catholics in the Harbour... You are hereby authorized and directed immediately to pull down such hutts or houses and suffer no more to be erected. The Irish continued to live in Newfoundland regardless of these edicts. It wasn't until 1784 when they were granted the right to practice the religion of their choice. These facts may have contributed to Thomas leaving Newfoundland, or if his wife was indeed French, he may have moved to Cape Breton with her family. In any event, by the mid 1760s they were living in Cape Breton. In 1768 Lt. Gov. Francklin of Nova Scotia reported on a number of settlers in Cape Breton who were living on and who had made improvements on lands to which they held no title. In the list of those at Gabarus, near the ruins of the French fortress of Louisbourg on the southern coast of Cape Breton, were "Richard Collins, Edward and Thomas McDonald, John Clewly [Clory?], Francis Joice [Josse], Peter Jervois [Girroir], John Perry, and ----- Curdo [Guillaume Cordeau], who had built dwelling-houses and stages," Uniacke's Sketches of Cape Breton (Halifax, 1958). There is no record of the McDonalds receiving title to their lands, so it seems they moved on to settle in D'Escousse on Isle Madame where Edward received a grant from the Crown in 1790. | 27 | 2. Edward2 McDonald (Thomas1) was born about 1747 in Newfoundland and died 12 Oct 1832 in D'Escousse, Richmond Co., NS (Source: St. Hyacinth Baptisms-Marriages-Burials 1832-1839). He married Marguerite-Gervaise Josse about 1771 in Gabarus, NS (Source: Marriage Revalidation by Fr. Bailly, 1771), daughter of Francois Josse and Marie Dardy. She was born about 1752, and died 26 Dec 1836 in D'Escousse, (Source: St. Hyacinth Baptisms-Marriages-Burials 1832-1839). Along with his father, Edward was listed as living on untitled land at Gabarus in 1768. Also listed was his father-in-law Francois Josse. Edward was still there in 1771 when missionary Fr. Bailly visited September 16 and revalidated the marriage of "Edmond Mcgdonel", born in Newfoundland, son of Thomas Mcgdonel and Marie Hell. On April 24, 1990 Stephen A. White of the Centre D'Etudes Acadiennes at the Universite de Moncton, New Brunswick wrote... ?I still find it very tempting to jump to the conclusion that the wife of Thomas McDonald, the first ancestor we have traced, was really Marie Hill (baptized about 1727). There is one problem with this, however. If Marie Hill were indeed Edward McDonald's mother, then Edward and Marguerite-Gervaise Josse would have been second cousins once removed, and would have required a dispensation to marry, which Father Bailly should have duly recorded. Of course, much depends upon what information the good missionary was given. If no one mentioned to him that Marie Hill was a first cousin of Marguerite-Gervaise's grandmother, Marguerite Dufaux, one cannot expect that he would give the young couple the appropriate release from the impediment. It is quite possible that Edward McDonald, coming from Newfoundland, would not have known of the relationship between himself and his Cape Breton bride. Hopefully further research will clarify this point, but I must confess that I am running out of new sources of information, so a definite resolution of the problem may never appear. On 12 Aug 1790 the Government of Cape Breton granted to Edward McDonald by letters patent, Lot No. 1 at D'Escousse which contained 21 8/10 acres. On 17 Nov 1826 Edward, yeoman, of D'Escousse, and his wife, listed as Margaret, sold their land between D'Escousse and Rocky Bay to William Britton of Arichat for 50 pounds. (Richmond Co. Deeds C:393). Edward and Gervaise sold the remainder of their land to grandsons Peter McDonald and Valentine McDonald, Jr. on 15 Dec 1830 for nine pounds (Richmond Co. Deeds D:260). This land was the northerly portion of the crown grant. A later map of the area shows Edward owning 250 acres (Lot CB148, now known as McDonald's Hill). Edward is listed in the 1811 census as a mariner. In the household were two people over the age of 60, presumably Edward and Gervaise. Also listed were two unmarried males and two unmarried females over age 14. Edward McDonald had eight cattle, seven sheep, no horses and no vessels. The only other McDonald listed in D'Escousse in 1811 was his son Valentin. In 1813 Edward, his sons and sons-in-law were listed in the Cape Breton militia roll as members of the Seventh Military Division. Edward is listed as age 65 years, a fisherman, born in Newfoundland, and a resident of D'Escousse. He owned 160 acres of land which he received by grant from the government, had one ox, six other horned cattle, and six sheep. Five of his acres were cleared. Also in the household was one woman, undoubtedly his wife Gervaise. His sons Francis, 24, and Edward, 20, were also listed. The parish register of St. Hyacinthe, D'Escousse, records the following: Le treize Octobre. Dix huit et trente-deux, nous pretre missionaire d'Arichat sousigne avons inhume Edouard McDonald age quatre vingt deux ans.......decede hier. Present, Jean Josse et Joseph Landry. [C. A. Lairez, Pretre] Edward McDonald's will was written two days before his death, but was not probated until 20 Dec. 1845 (Richmond County Probate, no. A44). It reads: In the Name of God Amen. | 39 | A fine lady has left us. Pearl Anne Fleet, Daughter of Dora Poirier and Martin Baccardax, passed away peacefully, in her 94th year at St. Joseph's Villa in Dundas, on October 25th. She almost invented kindness and hospitality, and my friend, Lynne Jarrett probably said it best, "Denise, we were always at your place!" She honed those skills in 'God's Country', Cape Breton Island, along with her four caring and attentive brothers Leon(Dean)(both deceased), Wilfred(Claire), Laughlin(Chris) and the late Douglas(Sally). Our doors in the East End were always open where cookies, popcorn and Pop Shoppe pop were always on the menu. Mom came to Hamilton because it was her beloved Freddie's(deceased) hometown; she was welcomed warmly by Dad's large family, especially by my Aunt, Marie Shields. Eventually, our family grew: Me, our beloved Marty(deceased) and Baby John(deceased). It was when grandchildren and great grandchildren came into the picture that her love really glowed; Marty, Christianne, Lauren(Andrew), and Cam and then Anisa, Moyra, Avery, Emilea, and Abigail. She was blessed! She was also blessed to be in the care of the extraordinary staff on Maplegrove; how can I ever thank you enough? To her many friends, my heartfelt gratitude for your long time commitment to my Mom. Mom was graced with her extended Family: Cornel Konig, who always treated her thoughtfully; Sandy Fleet, who brought her a precious gift and Maggie Fleet(Jimmy), whose utter devotion and love resonated deeply. Little girl and Sport, "G & G have left the building." | Baccardax, Anne Pearl (I9735)

| 40 | A short time after Tritram's death his widow Blanche was married to a Capt. William Hedge, who was old enough to have been her father, and from whom she soon separated. Blanch is frequently named on the records as a woman whose reputation was not credible to her herself, her family or her friends. The law put the onus on a woman to cry out for help if she was being propositioned against her will. In March 1656 John Gorum was fined forty shillings "for unseemly carriage toward Blanche Hull at an unseasonable time, being in the night." Blanche Hull was fined fifty shillings "for not crying out when she was assaulted by John Gorum in unseemly carriage towards her." Both Gorum and Blanche were married at this time, Gorum to Desire Howland, eldest daughter of John Howland and his wife, Elizabeth Tilley Howland, and Blanche to Tristram Hull. The court evidently considered Blanche to have been a willing participant rather than a victim. Not all desertion ended in divorce, and it was rare for a wife to be cut off in her husband's will, but when Captain William Hedges of Yarmouth drew up his will in 1670, he left his second wife, Blanche Hull, widow of Tristram Hull, only a token twelve pence, "full eleven pence more than she deserved". And "also what I have received of hers shall be returned to her again," because she had deserted him. after his death his widow, Blanche was married to a Capt. William Hedge, who was old enough to have been her father, and from whom she soon separated. https://www.geni.com/people/Blanche-Hull/361232712940011611?through=6000000003938525309 | Pudley, Blanche (I2362)

| 42 | Age 75 of Cheticamp, passed away peacefully at the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp on April 8th, 2022. He fought a courageous battle with cancer for over five years never complaining and always with a positive attitude. He was dealt a difficult hand being diagnosed after just 5 years of retirement, even starting radiation treatment on his 70th birthday. His drive and determination in the face of adversity will be lessons that will live on with all those who loved him. Gerard was born at the Cheticamp hospital and grew up in Grand ?tang. He is predeceased by his parents L?vis ? Isidore Chiasson and Marie-Henriette (Poirier) Chiasson. He is survived by his wife Geraldine (Caissie) Chiasson; and his two sons David (Tessa) Chiasson and Steven (Monique) Chiasson as well as his three siblings Edna (Jimmy) Poirier, Sylvia (Adrien) Boudreau and Robert (Elaine) Chiasson. Gerard was happiest when he was surrounded by his grandchildren whom he loved greatly, Colton, Kayla, Brylenne, Ashlyn and Jo?lie. Gerard moved to Toronto as a teenager where he met Geraldine, his beloved wife of 53 years and lifelong companion. Toronto is where they started their family when their first son David was born. They later returned to Grand ?tang in 1973 where their son Steven was born shortly after. He worked years managing Margaree Windows until he became the manager of the Cheticamp Coop Building Supplies. He passionately invested a lot of time and energy into his personal business, Chiasson Woodworking, where he manufactured wood windows and doors and later transitioned it into a successful equipment and tool rental business. Upon retirement he found his true passion when he fulfilled his lifelong dream of building a camp in the mountains and started perfecting his craft of making maple syrup. Every year he would find new trees to tap to ensure he had more than enough syrup to share with friends and family. He was in his happy place when he could venture up the mountains on his ATV and visit his camp even if it was simply to light a fire in his old wood stove and watch it burn. He was an active member of his community volunteering his time early in life with his involvement with Minor Hockey. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and sat on many committees and boards in Grand ?tang. He was even known to put on a lobster costume to lead the odd bus tour through the Mi-Car?me Interpretative Centre. He loved to act and sing in local concerts to raise money for various causes. He looked forward to his many social groups such as his morning coffee club and his weekly pool leagues. Not long ago he was still volunteering to deliver Meals on Wheels to the sick and elderly. If you ask any family member, they would probably say that his true calling in life was to make people laugh along with his gift of brightening up any room. He was a gentle man, humble beyond his years, lived life to the fullest and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those around him. Whether it was defending his favorite hockey team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, talking politics or discussing current events, he never backed down from friendly arguments with those who were willing to participate. He loved to spend quality time with friends which was even better time spent if it was over a round of golf or a game of pool. | Chiasson, Gerard (I14096)
