- John "Warren" Burke
November 13, 1949 - December 15, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Warren Burke, of River Tillard, on December 15, 2025, at the age of 76. Born in River Tillard on the "13th day of the eleventh month 1949" to Xavier and Edith (Sampson) Burke. He was the 5th of 10 children. Warren leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Debbie (Burke); his daughters, Selena (Russell), Tracy (Edward), Nadine (Ronan), and Sharlene.; his grandchildren, Gage (Dana), Joey (Kaitlyn) and Riley; Great-grandchildren, Bowen and Bradlee; step-grandchildren, Melanie, Shawn, Michael and Andrew; brothers, and sisters, Bernard, Lola, Connie, Carmelita (Blair), Fraser (Judy), Richard (Madonna), Rosemary (Rhodes) and John (Wanda); and his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Xavier and Edith; brother, Clem; in-laws, Ralph Murray, Mary Burke, Linda Burke and Harold Stevens; nephew, David King; father-in-law, Alexander and mother-in-law, Sarah. Warren spent his early years working on lake boats and would often talk about sailing through New York. Then worked in Halifax, staying with his Aunt Monica, along with his brothers Connie and Richard. But he was most proud of being a member of the Labourers International Union Local 1115 for over 50 years and also helped many new members who would join. He worked many jobs all over Cape Breton and even spent 3 years working in Fort McMurray with Labourers International Union Local 92. Even after he retired in 2017, he would still check up on the other members at the union hall in Sydney from time to time. Warren was known for his quick wit, storytelling and generosity. He enjoyed drives to the canal and making coffee deliveries to Burke Brothers, and catching up on the gossip; always having his sidekick, Moe, with him. He was also quick to tell people how lucky he and Debbie were to have "the girls" around to help out and he didn't know what they would do without them. We would like to thank all of Dad's brothers and sisters. Nieces and nephews, for all of their support over the last few months. You are all a perfect example of what a family should be, We would also like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre; Dr. Gillis, Dr. DeRoche, Lesley LeRue and Kyla MacKeigan of the Palliative Care Unit at Strait Richmond Hospital for all of their care and compassion during his illness; Rachael Green and staff at Green's Funeral Home for their help during this difficult time. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Service details will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Strait Richmond Palliative Care Society.
